Telegram Adds 3 Million Users During Facebook’s Biggest Outage Yet

Yesterday millions were impacted by outages across three of the world’s most popular internet services: Facebook, WhatsApp and Instagram. While some users couldn’t access any features from these services, others only experienced an inability to use certain features like stories or direct messaging.

This provided a huge unexpected number of signups for one of our favorite apps here at GrowTheHeckUp—Telegram. A year ago Telegram announced it had surpassed 200 million monthly active users. Telegram’s founder, Pavel Durov sent a message sent to his Telegram channel that read, “I see 3 million new users signed up for Telegram within the last 24 hours.”

If you follow GrowTheHeckUp then you know that Telegram is one of our favorite platforms. Personally, I’d go as far as to say it’s our number one productivity tool as far as communications goes. It’s fast, secure (we live like nothing is secure) and as practically unlimited file size transfers, which works great for those of us in music and media (everyone who does business on the internet is in media). If you’re not familiar, Telegram is like WhatsApp on steroids. There’s also a desktop component that synchs with the Telegram phone app.
