When we read the Scriptures, we are introduced to many people and the relationships they had with God. Every person we read about in the Bible has their own histories and personalities that make them unique. Depending on the purpose of each book in the Bible, we get different levels of insight from these books.
One of the most effective ways we can study the word of God is through doing character studies, where we focus on a specific person and study who they were by the information we read about them. Studying the Bible like this shows us the kinds of people God used in telling His story and purposes to us, and it helps us grow in our understanding of God and ourselves.
We see them in their flaws and all, and we see how God still used them despite their flaws. I know it can be difficult to relate to the stories of men and women from thousands of years ago, but if there’s anything I’ve learned, it’s that the Bible applied back then is timeless enough to apply to us today.
If there’s anyone that we can learn from through a character study, it would be the Apostle Peter! The Scriptures show he was a very passionate and straightforward man, who was also prone to compulsiveness and pride, which negatively influenced some decisions he made throughout his life. A few months ago in June, I decided to do a character study on my podcast because I was personally blessed by the grace God showed Peter in the midst of all the mistakes and immaturity he dealt with.
