Now Is the Time to Take a Financial Inventory of These 3 Things

Hey guys and gals, it is that time of the year again. It is time to check up on your financial life. There are three areas that you want to check in on before the end of the first quarter—March 31, 2019.

Investment Portfolio

Take a look at your investment portfolio, the one outside of your retirement accounts. You will want to take a look at what progress your investments are making and what other opportunities for investment are available to you currently. Your portfolio may be doing just fine, but it could be doing better. There is no real way to know if your portfolio is working to its optimal capacity unless you take a peek at it and the market. Remember the words of Peter Drucker, “You can’t manage what you can’t measure!”

Retirement Portfolio

Before March 31st you will want to review your retirement portfolio.  If you have a financial adviser, you will want to meet with that person to go over the retirement portfolio.  You will want to ensure that you are on track to meet your retirement goals, make adjustments to your goals, if necessary, and notate any progress.  If you don’t have a financial adviser, I suggest you sit down with someone to go over your retirement portfolio.  This is vitally important because you must plan on living to see your post wage-earning years.  If there is no plan, then you won’t be prepared.  You will also want to make sure all the benefactors of your retirement portfolio are still the benefactors that you want.  If you need to make a change, most certainly go ahead and make the change.

Just as with your retirement portfolio you are going to want to review the benefactors in your will.  If one of your benefactors has passed away or you no longer have a relationship with them, you will want to update your will to exclude them and possibly add someone else.  You wouldn’t believe how many stories I have heard where an ex-spouse obtained all the assets of their former partner, simply because the partner never updated their will!

Let’s get this done people, it is doable! Set those appointments up early this week, there is about two weeks left in the month!
