Throughout the scriptures and in history, God has shown His power and authority through signs and wonders. Signs and wonders are miraculous acts that testify of His existence, power, and will for us. As much as God has shown His power supernaturally, there’s always been warnings from Him concerning the deceptive use of signs and wonders to turn man against Him.
From the Old Testament to the New Testament, false prophets, teachers, and apostles have used signs and wonders to deceive those who follow them. They’re usually deceived themselves. In Deuteronomy 13:1-4, God speaks about false prophets who tell true prophecies and bring to pass signs and wonders:
“If there arises among you a prophet or a dreamer of dreams, and he gives you a sign or a wonder, and the sign or the wonder comes to pass, of which he spoke to you, saying, ‘Let us go after other gods’—which you have not known—‘and let us serve them,’ you shall not listen to the words of that prophet or that dreamer of dreams, for the Lord your God is testing you to know whether you love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul. You shall walk after the Lord your God and fear Him, and keep His commandments and obey His voice; you shall serve Him and hold fast to Him. Deuteronomy 13:1-4″
You see, God has a place for signs and wonders, they are used to communicate or confirm the word of God and what He’s doing in the earth. But it can easily be a tool of deception, because the idea of another god or ideology being powerful causes confusion to those who witness it. This is why the foundation that helps us evaluate spiritual experiences must be the written word of God.
I’ve heard from people who had powerful experiences with witch doctors, palm readers, psychics, and more. If you’re not grounded in the truth of the scriptures, you can walk away confused, or not know how to judge in discernment about the source of those experiences. But it is God’s word that is a lamp unto your feet, and a light unto your path, it is revealed truth that keeps us aware of the spiritual deception that exists out there.
Jesus speaks about the deception that will arise before His return in Matthew 24:24, that false christs and prophets will perform signs and wonders, and if possible, would deceive the elect. The antichrist, or lawless one will also engage in deceiving signs and wonders under the power of Satan. We struggle with different religions and spiritual experiences now, I can only imagine how much more it’ll be under the antichrist. Stand on the word of God. Let His word give you the foundation that allows you to judge supernatural experiences. Watch and pray, and humbly depend on the Holy Spirit to keep you from deception. No one is above it.
