Nearly two weeks ago, tens of millions of Shia Muslims openly defied ISIS when they made their way through war-ravaged land controlled by ISIS, risking their lives to reach the city of Karbala for the holy day of Arbaeen. Arbaeen is the event which marks the end of the 40-day mourning period following Ashura, the religious ritual that commemorates the death of the Prophet Mohammad’s grandson Imam Hussein in 680 AD.
According to the Independent, ISIS has declared Shia Muslims apostates and targeted them in its bloody campaign to establish a caliphate across Iraq and Syria. In fact, ISIS is responsible for recently killing 80 people—many of them pilgrims returning from commemorating Arbaeen in Karbala.
This march is one of the largest in the world, yet the mainstream media completely ignored it. Why? I can’t help but think that the mainstream media is helping carry out ISIS’s agenda to instill fear into people. The media’s divisive tactics should not be ignored and the American people should be aware of the manipulation the media employs when determining what or what not publish.
“Unfortunately [some] media outlets have gone for stories that to some extent can be divisive. If a group of Muslims does something good, it’s not mentioned or the religion is not mentioned. But if someone does something [negative], it is on the front page and their religion is mentioned,” Mohammed Al-Sharifi, a volunteer at last year’s event told the Independent.
As believers, we should always strive to be balanced in our views, opinions, and judgments and if you allow the media to heavily influence your opinions, you run the risk of operating in ignorance and possible slander when discussing those who have been targeted by the media.
“You shall not spread a false report. You shall not join hands with a wicked man to be a malicious witness. – Exodus 23:1
What do you make of the mainstream media ignoring the fact that not all Muslims are “bad” or “terrorists,” so as a result, only negative stories are published about them? Is it fair that they are ignoring the fact that tens of millions of Muslims are targets of ISIS and not controlled by nor align themselves with ISIS’s beliefs and agenda?
